Abstract:

This research sought to highlight certain key challenges prevailing in South Africa’s food system with a view to providing recommendations for improvement. It was produced using literature review, and conducting key informant interviews and a public survey as research methods. Particular barriers were identified relating to the country’s overreliance on animal-based protein and products (animal sourced foods or ASFs) and in advocating for a shift towards alternatives to ASFs, more specifically plant-based alternatives and cellular-based alternatives (Alternatives). Identified Key Issues were discussed, and Strategic Priority Areas were highlighted. Fifteen Recommend Interventions and sub-interventions were provided as to how law and policy can be used as a lever to transition the country away from intensive animal agriculture and ASFs towards Alternatives.
